What You Think, What You Do:A Study on the Impact of CEO Entrepreneurial Imaginativeness on Enterprise Ambidextrous Innovation

创造力学派认为,无想象不创新。对于企业创新行为的产生,CEO作为高层领导者,其认知能力发挥了极为关键的作用。本研究基于高阶理论,从认知视角探讨了CEO创业想象力与组织双元创新的内在关系。通过对227份有效调查问卷的数据分析的结论如下:(1)创造性想象力、社会性想象力、实用性想象力三个维度均是影响企业探索性创新和利用性创新的重要前因变量;(2)基于相对重要性的分析结果,相比其他维度,创造性想象力能够更好预测探索性创新,实用性想象力则更好地预测利用式创新。研究结论有助于从认知层面揭示CEO个体特征与组织创新绩效的关系。本研究拓展了创业想象力的相关研究,也突破了现有高阶理论中对CEO个体想象力研究不足的局限。研究结论为企业激活CEO创业想象力,进行有效的创新管理提供了理论支持和实践指导。

Creativity school believes that no imagination, no innovation. As a senior leader, CEO’s cognitive ability plays a key role in the emergence of enterprise innovation. Based on Upper Echelons Theory, this study discusses the internal relationship between CEO entrepreneurial imaginativeness and organizational ambidextrous innovation from a cognitive perspective. Through the data analysis of 227 valid questionnaires, the conclusions are as follows:(1) creative imaginativeness, social imaginativeness and practical imaginativeness are important antecedents affecting enterprise exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation;(2) Based on the analysis results of relative importance, compared with other dimensions, creative imaginativeness can better predict exploratory innovation,while practical imagination can better predict exploitative innovation. The research conclusion is helpful to reveal the relationship between CEO individual characteristics and organizational innovation performance from the cognitive level. This study expands the related research of entrepreneurial imaginativess and breaks through the limitation of insufficient research on CEO’s individual imaginativess in the existing Upper Echelons Theory. The research conclusion provides theoretical support and practical guidance for enterprises to activate CEO entrepreneurial imaginativess and carry out effective innovation management.
