《红楼梦》“忌妒”情感隐转喻及其翻译研究

A study of the translation of“envy”in A Dream of Red Mansions from the perspective of metaphor and metonymy

“忌妒”情感的内涵丰富,基于人类对客观环境的主观体验,其概念内容可以通过隐喻和转喻在不同语言中表达。本文基于《红楼梦》汉英平行语料库,将《红楼梦》中的“忌妒”情感分为3类,并采用定性分析的方法探究3类“忌妒”情感的隐喻、转喻使用特征及其在《红楼梦》两个英译本中的转换表达。研究发现,杨译本和霍译本在翻译“忌妒”情感隐喻时,以归化为主,在翻译“忌妒”情感转喻时,以异化为主,这种翻译策略的选择可以从人体生理特征、生活经验、传统文化等角度进行解释。

“Envy”is an emotion with many connotations. According to subjective experience,the conceptual content of “envy”can be expressed in different languages by metaphor and metonymy. Based on the Chinese-English parallel corpus of A Dream of Red Mansions,this study divides “envy”into three types and makes a qualitative analysis of the metaphor and metonymy of“envy”and their translation. This study finds that both Yang’s English translation and Hawks’ s English translation primarily adopt domestication in translating metaphors related to “envy ”,and foreignization in translating metonymies of “envy”. It can be explained by the physiological characteristics of the human body,human life experience,and traditional culture.
