Objective To explore the relationship between anxiety and sleep quality of medical students, and the mediating effect of smartphone addiction. Methods The the general anxiety disorders-7 scale(GAD-7),the Athens sleep scale(AIS) and the smartphone addiction scale(AS-SV) were used to investigate 2 850 students in a medical college in Anhui Province from November to December 2020.Results There were 1 337(46.9%) medical students with anxiety,629(22.1%) with sleep disorders and 1 350(47.4%) with smartphone addiction. The medical students’ anxiety was related to factors such as age, grade, and whether they like their major(P<0.05).Pearson correlation analysis showed that the medical students’ anxiety was significantly positively correlated with sleep disorders and smartphone addiction(r=0.588,0.434,both P<0.01),anxiety had a positive predictive effect on medical students’ sleep quality and smartphone addiction(β=0.532,0.434,both P<0.01),and smartphone addiction played a part of the mediating effect between anxiety and sleep quality. Conclusion Anxiety not only directly affect sleep quality, but also indirectly affect sleep quality through the mediating effect of smartphone addiction.
