In The Music of Chance, Auster illustrates his view of freedom from perspectives of social function, ethical principle and cultural spirit by the image of wall to indicate that in contemporary American society, discipline from American capital and power and bound from Jewish Covenant tradition and trauma history are imposed on individuals, which is the result of American Jewish cultural community building. By exploring the absence of individual freedom in American Jewish cultural community, Auster manifests contemporary American Jews’ spiritual dilemma and living conditions,which presents his reflections on Jews’ life.
