威廉·莫里斯诗作《古德隆恩的爱人们》的主要故事情节取材于北欧中世纪萨迦作品《瓦特恩峡谷萨迦》。莫里斯在创作时充分考虑到了维多利亚读者的兴趣与当时的文化氛围,并在改写时采用了相应的改编策略。他对原作有吸收、有继承,其中海外贸易、宗教改宗、手工艺品等话题对当时的英国有着重要的现实启示意义。莫里斯对原作也有筛选、有改动,尤其是对女主人公古德隆恩形象的改写,与维多利亚时期女德规范与价值取向有着密切的关系。

The main plot of William Morris’s poem“The Lovers of Gudrun”is based on the medieval Scandinavian saga Laxdaela Saga.Morris fully considered the interests of Victorian readers and the cultural atmosphere at that time,and adopted some appropriate adaptation strategies while rewriting.He absorbed and inherited some themes and topics of the original work,including overseas colonization,religious reform and handicrafts,which all had important enlightening significance to British society of his time.Morris also screened and changed some themes and aspects of the original work,as evidenced by his revised image of the heroine Gudrun based largely on the moral values for women in the Victorian period.
