A Study of Auspicious Terms in the Archive of the Qing Imperial Workshop

中国传统吉言装饰体系可追溯至汉代,在明代形成了由皇权推动的装饰体系,且为清代所继承。本文借助清宫造办处档案的详实记录,探讨了皇权在装饰制作中发挥作用的机制,以及装饰艺术与吉祥语汇之间的关系。清宫吉言装饰体系带来了审视古代书画、玉器、青铜器的全新视角,也对物质文化的演进产生了重要影响。

The paper explores the relationship between the Qing decorative art and the auspicious terms based on the records of the auspicious names of some decorative artifacts in the Archive of the Qing Imperial Workshop. The adoption of traditional Chinese auspicious terms into decorative art can be traced to the Han Dynasty. The art decoration got regularized and systemized under the supervision and administration by the Ming imperial power, and was inherited by the Qing dynasty. The archive of the imperial workshop records the mechanism of the imperial power playing a role in the making of artistic decoration, above all, the process and the thoughts over the implied meanings given to a certain artwork. The auspicious terms for artistic decoration provide a different perspective to look at Chinese traditional art of painting, jade and bronze, which had much impact on the development of material culture as well.
