【Grammar and the Mother Tongue】While it was once usual for pupils in secondary education to be taught the(traditional)grammar of their own language, albeit through the dull mechanics of‘clause analysis’and‘parsing’,the emphasis in education at least in the English-speaking countries over the last few decades has been on‘creativity’in the mother tongue,a trend accompanied by the abandonment of formal grammar. Some feel that this has led to deterioration in literacy, and so,for example, the relatively new National Curriculum for England and Wales prescribes attention to formalities, though some of these, such as punctuation, may be argued to pertain only tenuously to grammar.See Kingman(1988)and Hudson(1992).
