This paper analyzes the maid system and surrogacy in The Handmaid’s Tale. Gilead signs contracts with the maids and forces them into surrogacy, resulting in their circulation between different families as a commodity for pregnancy and reproduction. This “contract surrogacy” severs the relationship between familial parental power, custody and guardianship. It is colored by racist and ideological connotations.Through “contract surrogacy”, Gilead deprives the poor and people of color of their reproductive rights in order to maintain the population, class structure and the political rule of the white elite.
