The sounds of the city in Jean Echenoz’s novels carry the characters’sensory experience of urban space. His novels describe a multitude of sound sources and the sounds are juxtaposed together, presenting a fractured, fragmented and flat image of the city. The exaggerated human and animal sounds reveal the theatricality of city and its characteristic signs. The material entities of the city no longer indicate their specific functions or symbolic meanings, they are instead abstracted into a network of signs. The sense of hearing attempts to integrate the fragmented clutter, giving it a sense of levels and rhythm.A purely aural consciousness prompts a withdrawal from the signs of the city and a greater focus on its materiality. The culture of chance, improvisation and non-linearity that is restored by the auditory forms a counterpoint to the culture of visual rationality.
