Pearl S. Buck,known as“a Messenger between Chinese and Western cultures”,is an American female writer. She has created many novels reflecting the living conditions of the old Chinese people. Her unremitting efforts and great contributions to promoting cultural exchanges between China and the West undoubtedly prove her unique artistic talent and literary minds. One of her masterpieces,Pavilion of Women,based on the background of an old feudal family in China,is considered to be an innovative literary work with multiple themes and worthy of much exploration. This paper explores the physical and mental process of the heroine Mrs. Wu’s“self-redemption”reflected in the work to offer a different interpretation on its theme.
