French writer Laetitia Colombani’s novel The Braid resonates very strongly with the real world to the extent that it juxtaposes the three spaces of India,Italy and Canada and develops a cotemporal narration around the ethical dilemmas of three women, namely,Smita,Giulia and Sarah.Through the shifting perspectives of the characters, the ethical norms burdening each space are intermingled with their personal experiences and the ethical dilemmas facing each of them, involving caste, gender norms, racial norms and workplace norms, are bought into light. This article combines the theories of space narratology and ethical literary criticism and explores the ethical norms in three different spaces and the ethical dilemmas facing women. The three protagonists, having established a kind of“sisterhood”that transcends nationality, race, class and cultural differences on account of the“braids”,are not only fighting against the ethical constraints imposed on them individually, but are also striving for the rights and interest for women generally.
