Doris Lessing’s works are not only a reflection of her era but also exert a considerable influence on people’s spirit. The Grass is Sing, published in 1950,reveals an indifferent human relationship between different races, genders and identities in the colony, and describes the tragic fate of marginal characters. With the help of the concept of essentialism, this paper tries to analyze the characters’subversion of essentialist identity, while exploring the tragic meaning of the novel.
