A Study on the Translation of Chinese Classics in The China Review—Exemplified by John Chalmers's English Translation of Chinese Poems

《中国评论》刊载了中国古代文学、哲学、法学、史学等不同类型的典籍译文,典籍译介成就斐然。以来华传教士湛约翰的古诗英译为例,探讨早期《中国评论》西方译者的典籍译介策略和方法。研究发现,《中国评论》上的典籍译者采取直译、节译、释译等不同的翻译方法相结合的方式译介中国典籍,不拘泥于某一种翻译策略,翻译技法的运用灵活多变,推动了中国文化西传,对英国专业汉学的形成和发展产生了深远的影响。

The China Review achieved a lot in the translation of Chinese classics by publishing different types of translations of ancient Chinese classics covering literature,philosophy,law,history and others.Taking John Chalmers's translation of ancient Chinese poems as an example,this paper attempts to discuss the translation skills which the early western translators adopted in The China Review.It is found that the western translators in question used different translation methods,such as literal translation,abridged translation and paraphrasing,to translate and introduce Chinese classics in accordance with respective text types.They did not stick to a certain translation strategy,and their translation techniques were flexible and changeable.The China Review has made great contribution to spreading Chinese culture to the western world,leaving a far-reaching impact on the formation and development of British professional Sinology,.
