Set in the French Revolution,A Tale of Two Cites,a masterpiece written by Charles Dickens, delineates the conflicts between the aristocracy and the plebeian, which reveals the good and the evil in human nature, and mirrors the historic upheaval and social tension during the social transformation. The novel switches the narrative space continually as the story unfolds, intertwining the macro and micro perspectives,as well as juxtaposing public and private territories. It associates social space with production relations, ideology and social relations, thus presenting a vivid picture of the spatial characteristics of social transformation phase, which echos with Henri Lefebvre's triad of social space.Based on Lefebvre's space theory, this paper intends to elaborate on the space-writing in A Tale of Two Cites, thereby interpreting materiality, spirituality and sociality hidden in transitional society.
