The short story,Chrysanthemum,is one of Steinbeck′s classical masterpieces.Elisa,the heroine,was a rural microcosm of female status at that time.Elisa suffered from natural confinement,family restrainment and social trammels physically and mentally.As a result of multiple oppression,Elisa began to awake and attempted to escape away from her living predicament for freedom.Elisa failed to realize her dream,but her struggles expose the fact that humanity has been passing through a grey and desolate time of confusion.The story also arouses people to paying much more attention to women′s value,the unity of spirit and material and human free development.
