Recording China: Narrative Texts by Contemporary Western People During the Thirteen Hongs

清朝广州一口通商造就了特殊的十三行时期,西方传教士、商人、游历者留下了诸多文献记录他们的所见所闻,并以其对中国的描述重构了中国并影响了西方对中国的想象,此类“时人记述文本”可分为游历型文本、研究型文本等,具有不可替代的史料价值。

The Guangzhou single port in Qing Dynasty made a special period of Thirteen Hongs. Western missionaries, merchants and travelers left a lot of literature recording what they had seen and heard in Guangzhou. Their description of China reconstructed the image of China, and influenced westerners’ imagination of China. This kind of narrative texts by contemporary western people can be classified into tourist text, research text and so on, which has irreplaceable value of historical materials.
