Through the interpretation of Saturday, one of the representative works of contemporary British writer Ian McEwan, this paper analyzes the paradoxical relationships between life and death, madness and civilization, solitude and gregariousness, morality and non-morality implied in the novel. It is intended to explore the catastrophic consequences on human existence caused by terrorism, which is thought as not merely a threat to human life, but an impact on civilization order, interpersonal communication and moral values. However,it can be believed that as long as there is love, rationality and conscience on the earth, man will get out of the predicament.
