Money or Housework:The Effect of Husband^Economic and Housework Contribution on Wife’s Marital Satisfaction

本文使用2014年中国家庭追踪调查(CFPS)数据研究了丈夫的经济贡献和家务贡献对妻子婚姻满意度的影响。研究发现,当代中国家庭的性别分工模式依旧传统,且大多数妻子对当前的性别分工模式和婚姻状况表示满意。丈夫的收入和家务时间分别通过影响妻子对丈夫.经济贡献和家务贡献满意度的途径影响其婚姻满意度。相比家务贡献,妻子对丈夫经济贡献的满意度对其婚姻满意度有更强的影响。多组比较研究发现,丈夫的经济贡献对妻子婚姻满意度的影响不随妻子特征的变化而变化;但相比传统女性,现代女性更可能因为丈夫的家务参与不足而对其家务贡献产生不满,进而导致婚姻满意度下降。总体来看,当前中国家庭的性别分工模式对妻子婚姻满意度的影响表现出传统与现代相互交融的特征,中国特殊的现代化进程是导致这一结果的主要因素。

Using data of the China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)in 2014.this study examines the effect of husband s economic and housework contribution on wife's marital satisfaction.It is found that the gender division of labor in contemporary Chinese families is still traditional,and most wives are satisfied with the gendered division of labor and their marital life.Husband's income and housework time affect wife's marital satisfaction through influencing their satisfaction with husband s economic contribution and hcmsework contribution.Compared with husband s housework contribution,wife's satisfaction with hus-hand s economic contribution has a stronger effect on their marital satisfaction.The effect of husband s income on wife's marital satisfaction does not vary with wife*s characteristics,but modem women are more likely than traditional women to be discontent with husband s low level of domestic involvement and thus more likely to be dissatisfied with mamage.In conclusion,the effect of gender division of labor on wife's marriage satisfaction is characterized by an integration of tradition and modernity,and China s special modernization process is the main factor leading to this result.
