Elizabeth Jolley is one of the most iconic women writers of contemporary Australian literature, and in 1986 her masterpiece The Well won the Miles Franklin Award,Australia’s highest literary prize. In this novel, the author portrays a rich cast of characters with distinctive personalities:the love-struck Hester, the dark Loli Katherine and the caustic Mrs.Borden.This paper analyses the causes of the transformation of the three women’s personalities from a psychological point of view, and applies the Kantian concept of dichotomy to analyse the duality of the three women’s personalities in the context of the time and to interpret their spiritual levels in order to deepen the reader’s understanding of the characters in this novel.
