For National Glory:The Cultural Purport and Significance of Zhang Taiyan’s Sinology Periodicals

章太炎德高望重、学识渊博,一生把保存国粹并使之发扬光大引为己任,除了作为资产阶级革命思想家和活动家名动一时之外,更重要的是其国学大师的身份,在海内外影响深巨。早在《国粹学报》创办时期,章太炎即被尊为国粹派的泰斗,从而被视为该刊灵魂人物。其在民国期间参与编辑、创办的国学期刊《华国月刊》《国学商兑》《国学论衡》《制言》等,有的持续时间较长,有的虽仅出版数年,但都是从古文化的底蕴中挖掘新义,在热烈的争论和探讨中拓宽国人视野,对于甄明学术、发扬国光、补弊人心世道功莫大焉。对于振兴中国固有历史文化,保存民族精神,促进近现代国学和国学教育的发展,均有着深远的意义和影响。

Highly respected and knowledgeable,Zhang Taiyan made it his duty to preserve and promote the quintessence of Chinese culture in his whole life.Famous as a bourgeois revolutionary thinker and activist,he is more important as a master of Chinese traditional culture with profound influence both at home and abroad.In the founding period of The Journal of Chinese Quintessence,Zhang was already regarded as the leader of the school of national quintessence,and the soul of the journal.The sinology journals he established and edited during the period of the Republic of China,such as China Monthly,Sinology Trading,Sinology Forum,and Zhiyan,short or long lived,all attempt to dig classical culture for new meanings.They broadened the vision of the Chinese people,promoted the academic research,glorified national culture and redeemed people’s spirit.And they also have far-reaching significance for the revitalization of Chinese culture,the preservation of national spirit,and the development and education of modern Chinese culture.
