An intercultural perspective on Chinese aesthetics

摘要 在地球上最遥远的角落,也可看到西方式现代性的印记。这些发展对这个星球上的人类事业而言是福是祸,将留待子孙后代来决定。无论最终的判断是什么,在知识分子中都似乎有一个全球公认的假设,即西方研究模式下的人文学科的理论方法和复杂性水平将作为普遍规范得以应用。这似乎是受到西方在许多其他领域的优越地位的启发,特别是在技术、自然科学乃至军事能力方面。 Among intellectuals, there seems to be a globally accepted assumption that the theoretical approach and level of complexity in the Humanities, as they are studied in the West, are to be applied as universal norms.China is no exception concerning this one-way-street of cross-cultural exchange in the Humanities. Modern Chinese intellectual history can largely be read as a history of China’s struggle with Western ideas. Modern Chinese aesthetics forms an essential part of this historical struggle with Western thought.Intercultural dialogue first happens, when both sides can express their views and are being taken seriously. It is about time to begin such dialogues between the West and other cultural areas on the globe. An essential condition for a successful dialogue, however, would be that each side is able to get to know the other through translations.
