Jesmyn Ward, a contemporary black American writer, described the racial discrimination suffered by blacks in the United States in Sing, Unburied, Sing through the magic writing at the three levels of narration, character and theme. This novel constructed a fantasy world beyond the boundaries of life and death, time and space, shaped a group of characters with distinctive aesthetic characteristics of Voodoo, explored the theme of “born to die”, and highlighted the artistic tension of black literary works. In the interweaving of reality and fiction, history and present, the novel criticized the crime of racial discrimination,affirmed the spiritual power of black traditional culture, and expressed the strong desire of black groups to pursue freedom and equality.
