A Comparison of the Images of Yumi and Liu Fenxiang

玉米和柳粉香是毕飞宇长篇小说《玉米》中的两个典型的悲剧女性形象。她们两个的境遇十分相似,同样作为最弱的弱者,只能匍匐在男权的阴影之下,靠着对爱情、婚姻的幻想和自我损毁来反抗;但她们又有相异性,玉米受封建传统思想毒害更深,身上郁结着凝重的权力色彩,蕴含着“鬼气”,而柳粉香则体现出了中国乡村在摆脱封建走向现代化进程中的些微痕迹,她身上已经具有了现代女性的某些特征,自有一股“仙气”。

Yumi and Liu Fenxiang are two typical tragic female images in Bi Feiyu’s novel Yumi. Their circumstances are quite similar. As the weakest of the weak, both of them can only crawl under the shadow of male power, and struggle via fantasy of love and marriage, and self-destruction. However,they are also different. Yumi is badly affected by the feudal traditional thoughts, containing a strong color of power and a taste of “ghost spirit”, while Liu Fenxiang reflects the traces of Chinese villages in the process of getting rid of the feudal traditions and moving towards modernization. She already has some characteristics of modern women, and a taste of “fairy spirit”.
