“Mistakes of Notes” in Hu Feng’s Letter to Ba Jin on January 5, 1950

《胡风全集》收录了1950年1月5日胡风致巴金的一封信,编者对此信进行了“注释”,认为这是胡风与巴金谈论有关《山灵》再版事宜。此条注释的推测是不确切的,从相关书信文字中可以看出,此时胡风本人并不在上海,巴金正在平明出版社积极推出“新译文丛刊”丛书系列,他有意把胡风的《回忆科洛连珂和珂丘宾斯基》纳入这套丛书加以出版,写信征求胡风的“意见”。胡风1月5日的回信,即是对巴金建议的“答复”,他因不在上海,专程在家信中对妻子梅志进行说明。

The letter volume of The Complete Works of Hu Feng contains a letter from Hu Feng to Ba Jin on January 5, 1950. The editor “annotated” this letter and thought that the letter involves Hu Feng and Ba Jin’s discussion about the reprint of Shanling. In fact, the speculation made in this note is not correct. Between the lines of the letters, we can see that while Hu Feng was not in Shanghai at this time(Hu stayed in Beijing to solve his ideological problems), Ba Jin was actively launching the publication of “new translation series” in Pingming Publishing House. He intended to include Hu Feng’s Recollection of Kololenko and Kechubinsky in this book series for publication, and wrote a letter to solicit Hu Feng’s “opinions”. Hu Feng’s reply on January 5 was a “reply” to Ba Jin’s suggestion. Since he was not in Shanghai, he wrote a special home letter to explain the issue to his wife Mei Zhi.
