Within the context of the Throwaway Culture in the U.S.in the 1950s and 60s,this paper intends to analyze the image of waste in Thomas Pynchon’s The Crying of Lot 49 and interpret how waste as a key signifier and core metaphor manifests a serious problem in the consumerist society and meanwhile, relates to both the political and ethical dimensions of the narrative.Pynchon’s “waste” is not naturally endowed with negative connotations;on the contrary,it bears the potential of charging capitalism and functions as the rhetoric for the underground’s resistance against the mainstream culture. In addition,it catalyzes ethical behavior and compassion, inspires people to question the cultural logic that turns some into human waste and reflect upon the ethical responsibility that society has towards the marginalized others.
