The Winter’s Tale has a distinct sense of geographical space and cartography. The promotion of plot and the identification of character in the play are completed with the transformation of geographical space and map background.Sicily and Bohemia, the two major map backgrounds, cannot be simply dichotomized.By examining them with the method of literary cartographic criticism,we can find that they are essentially the metaphorical projection of the image of extreme patriarchy on behalf of James I.The restriction and exclusion of men to women's space of power in the play alludes to the destruction and reconstruction of the order of gender and social structure in the process of patriarchal restoration in the early Stuart dynasty, and the destruction of space for female power in the state of crevice and concealment. The return and resurrection of women in the play shows the reproduction of female power cartography and space of power.By placing the text of play in the historical and cultural context,we can conclude that Shakespeare metaphorically expressed his anxiety about the kingship of James I.
