In 1735,eight works from the Book of Songs translated by Joseph de Prémare were published in the Description of the Empire of China. This paper interprets the translation in light of the Chinese“Rites Controversy”and points out that Prémare,as a representative of the“Figurists”tried to build a bridge between the Book of Songs and the Bible, proving a connection between ancient Chinese culture and Christian theology. At the same time,in order to defend the position of the Jesuit missionaries in the Chinese“Rites Controversy”,he also changed the content of the translation, and created the compatibility between Chinese culture and Christianity through paratexts,so as to spread an image of China in line with the interest of the Society of Jesuits.
