In the late Qing Dynasty,as an important part of national coastal defense,Shandong’s coastal defense,in the process of construction and development,presents several distinct characteristics,which have not only the brand of the traditional era,but also the features of the transitional period.Shandong’s coastal defense construction in the late Qing Dynasty shows dual nature.While playing a positive role,there were also some historical limitations,which were hard to conquer and seriously restricted its own development.It is wise to learn from the past to know the present,so analyzing the characteristics as well as gains and losses of Shandong coastal defense in the late Qing Dynasty will undoubtedly provide some historical enlightenment for today’s marine cause.
