Genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1) and type 2(HSV-2).The clinical manifestations of genital herpes consist of single or clustered vesicles on the genitalia, perineum, perianal areas, and buttocks or upper thighs that ulcerate before resolving.However, the clinical manifestations of genital herpes are often atypical, and asymptomatic virus shedding occurs very often, which bring significant challenges to the prevention and treatment.Therefore, on July 23,2021,Dr.Workowski of the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and dozens of specialists dedicated to sexually transmitted infections collaboratively issued the latest sexually transmitted disease treatment guidelines.Based on the evidence-based medicine, this guideline recommends strategies on the typical clinical scenarios of genital herpes.This guideline is to assist clinicians with the management of genital herpes comprehensively.
