An Exploration of Shen Youding’s Theory of Meaning

意义理论是现代逻辑哲学、语言哲学的核心议题。沈有鼎从佛教唯识学认识论出发,借鉴胡塞尔的意向性理论,对汉语表达式的形式结构以及意义和真值作了具体的论述,形成了系统的意义理论研究体系。在对语言、思想和对象三者关系的讨论中,沈有鼎为其唯名论立场进行辩护。沈有鼎的意义理论不仅在20世纪前期的中国语言哲学发展中具有超前的理论意义,而且对于解决空专名疑难等当代逻辑哲学与语言哲学研究中的前沿问题,以及为中国哲学研究提供新的思路和发展方向方面,仍具有重要启迪价值。

Theory of meaning is the core issue of modern philosophy of logic and philosophy of language.Starting from the epistemology of Buddhist and drawing on Husserl’s theory of intentionality,Shen Youding made a specific discussion on the formal structure,meaning and truth value of Chinese expressions,forming a systematic research system of theory of meaning.In the discussion of the relationship among language,thought and object,Shen Youding defended his nominalism position.Shen Youding’s research on theory of meaning not only has advanced theoretical significance in the development of Chinese philosophy of language in the early 20 th century,but also has important enlightening value for solving the frontier problems in contemporary philosophy of logic and philosophy of language research,such as the problem of empty proper names,and providing new ideas and development directions for the research of Chinese philosophy.
