As one of the core themes in ethical philosophy, emotional impulses occupied much weight in the intellectual history of Europe. As distinct from rational tradition of Greek interpretation of emotions,Augustine refers to the philosophical method of setting free from impulses in sages as a moral defect. In exploring Augustine’s analysis of ancient philosophy of impulses,we find that he regarded the manner of the movement of the soul as a sort of emotion. This study argues that a multidimensional lens has been developed in Augustine’s late thought of life which he criticizes the traditional ethical values of impulses and defends a new notion of morality.Augustine’s insights on the multi-dimension of the transcendental life offers a new reflection on the features of emotional impulses thus deepening our knowledge of the human morality and the social ethics.
