《儒林外史》在叙事艺术上不同于其他章回小说,这集中表现在它对叙事本身的重视和经营,因而其叙事纯度要远远高于以往的章回小说。《儒林外史》对叙事纯度的追求,大致体现在三个方面:一是叙事者退居幕后;二是诗文与炫学色彩的淡化;三是模式化的景物描写减少与说话套语的消泯。《儒林外史》对叙事纯度的把握不仅表现出作者对故事情节的高度重视,也体现了章回小说发展到《儒林外史》这一阶段在叙事方面的变化与发展。
