Initially, the mausoleum of Emperor Wen of the Western Han Dynasty did not have an above-ground mound. The dense pine forest growing on top of it forming a square-shaped landscape might be one of the reasons why the mound of Western Han imperial mausoleums changed from a‘fang(square grid)’shape to a‘fudou(upside-down pecked)’shape.Because of this change, the size of mausoleum chamber became considerably smaller, whilst a double-circled mausoleum yard also appeared. The waicangkeng(outer sacrificial pits)were orderly aligned and distributed around the mausoleum in a concentric fashion. These characteristics directly influenced the layout and system of imperial mausoleums of the middle to late Western Han Dynasty.
