The stele of Ruilian Shitu(Poetry and Painting of Auspicious Lotus),now being curated at the Beilin Museum of Xi’an,was engraved and erected in year seven of the Hongzhi Era of the Ming Dynasty by King Yongshou,Zhu Chenglin to praise the virtues of his brother, the Qinfan governor,Zhu Chengyong. The motivation behind the engraving of the stele was related to the Qinfan governor’s activities of appreciating lotus. The images in the stele borrowed some lotus-styled patterns commonly decorated on Yuan and Ming Dynasties porcelain,in order to express the symbolic meanings of probity, nobility, solicitude and clemency. The images also imply the idea of good wishes for the Qinfan governor’s great succession of descendants and political harmony. This stele thus provides important clues to understand the interaction between regional governors from the royal lineage and local people, and between the emperor and central governmental officers during the Hongzhi Resurgence Era of the Ming Dynasty.
