On Zhidun and the Sinicization of Buddhism

佛教自两汉之际传入中土伊始,就逐渐走上了中国化的道路。在魏晋这个重要的历史节点,支遁为推进佛教中国化的进程做出了许多重要探索与创新:他会通玄佛创立即色宗,开创了玄学化的中国特色佛学体系;他重视佛教的伦理道德和政治建设,援儒入佛,对佛教进行入世改造,并出入朱门推广佛教;因为不局限于沙门教义,所以他在融合儒、佛、道三教理念方面颇具优势,奠定了禅宗的发展基础。支遁对佛教的改造促进了中国佛教的进一步发展。

Since Buddhism was introduced into China in the Han dynasty,it has gradually embarked on the path of the sinicization.At this important historical node of the Wei and Jin dynasties,Zhidun made many important explorations and innovations to promote the process of the sinicization of Buddhism.He established the Jise Sect through the metaphysical Buddhism,creating a metaphysical Buddhist system with Chinese characteristics;he attached great importance to ethics and morality,and the political construction of Buddhism,introducing Confucianism into Buddhism,transforming Buddhism into the world,and promoting Buddhism to the royal family and nobility by preaching it to feudal nobles;and because he was not limited to the doctrine of Sramana,he had great advantages of integrating the ideas of Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism,which laid the foundation for the development of Zen.Therefore,Zhidun’s transformation of Buddhism promoted the further development of Chinese Buddhism.
