This article explores the early history of piano pedaling signs by examining manuscripts and first editions of piano scores from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.It is found that the earliest pedal markings appeared in the 1790s.They gradually transformed into the signs with which we are familiar nowadays in the 1820s.The meanings of early pedal signs are elusive.The authors suggest that they should be conceived of as expressive markings rather than indications of foot movements.
