杨毓麟是辛亥时期著名的民族民主革命家和新闻工作者,曾先后编办过《湘学新报》《神州日报》《民立报》等报刊,并为多种进步报刊撰稿,有着丰富的新闻实践经验。远赴日、英等国的留学经历,使其擅长用世界的眼光来审视本国新闻事业的发展。他认为报纸是国家和民族思想能力的表征、报刊发展与国民素质之间存在着联动关系。对晚清政府颁行报律以钳制新闻自由的行径,杨毓麟予以了强烈的批判,他非常强调发挥新闻媒体的社会动员、深度解释、开阔视野、监督政府与官员的职能,极力争取报刊自由与独立的社会地位。鲜明的个性和行事作风影响着杨毓麟观察和思考中外新闻事业发展的方式。他的新闻实践与思想具有目标明确、富于激情、观察敏锐、视野开阔以及逻辑性强等特征,在中国近代新闻事业发展史上占有重要的一席之地。

Yang Yulin was a famous national democratic revolutionist and journalist in the Revolution of 1911.He had successively compiled and run newspapers and periodicals such as Xiangxue Newspaper,Shenzhou Daily and Minli Newspaper,and wrote for a variety of progressive newspapers and periodicals.He has rich practical experience in journalism.The experience of studying abroad in Japan,Britain and other countries made him good at examining the development of his own journalism from a world perspective.He believed that newspapers were the representation of the ideological ability of the country and the nation,and there was a linkage between the development of newspapers and periodicals and national quality.Yang Yulin strongly criticized the late Qing government’s promulgation of newspaper laws to curb press freedom.He put great emphasis on giving full play to the functions of news media in social mobilization,in-depth interpretation,broadening vision,supervising government and officials,and striving for the social position of press freedom and independence.Yang Yulin’s distinctive personality and style of conduct influenced his way of observing and thinking about the development of Journalism at home and abroad.His journalistic practice and thought had the characteristics of clear goal,passion,keen observation,broad vision and strong logic,and occupy an important place in the development history of modern Chinese journalism.
