Influence in Transnational Cooperation: Theme Words and Their International Impact in China-US Management Studies

以2000—2015年在UTD24期刊上发表的中美独著和中美合著论文为研究对象,运用单因素方差分析方法研究一国独著和跨国合作论文主题词特征以及国际影响力差异,探究学术论文主题词特征对国际影响力的作用。结果发现:(1)中美两国合著是中国在UTD期刊发表论文的主要形式。(2)中美独著论文主题词新颖性普遍高于中美合著论文,管理学领域跨国合作会降低学术论文主题词的新颖性。美国独著论文的被引频次普遍高于中国独著论文,中美合著论文被引频次介于二者之间,与美国合作可以提升中国管理学研究的国际影响力。(3)中美管理学论文主题词的关注度和新颖性显著影响国际影响力。学术论文主题词关注度显著促进国际影响力;主题词新颖性会显著抑制国际影响力。

With the deepening of globalization, transnational cooperation has become an important form of scientific research, and the impact of transnational cooperation has become an important issue of academic concern. A large number of studies have shown that international collaborative papers have a higher impact than papers published by a country alone. However, there are some special cases and counterexamples due to the impact of cooperative countries and fields.Therefore, the specific mechanism of how transnational scientific research cooperation enhances or weakens the impact of academic papers remains to be further explored. Management studies depend on the politics, economy and social culture of a country. Scientific research should keep up with the international frontier and pay attention to the domestic situation,whose situational characteristics are also reflected in the theme words to a certain extent. Therefore, the theme words of academic papers may be one of the mechanisms to explain the impact effect of transnational cooperation.Therefore, this study focuses on the field of management, selects China and the United States as the research objects,takes the academic papers in the field of management in China and the United States as samples, focuses on the differences in the attention and novelty of theme words and international impact, and the impact of the attention and novelty of theme words in academic papers on international impact. In this study, we used univariate analysis of variance(ANOVA) and negative binomial regression method to investigate the differences in the characteristics of theme words and international impact between Chinese and American papers published in UTD24 from 2000 to 2015, and explored the effects of theme words characteristics of academic papers on international impact.The results show that: first, China-US cooperation is the main form of Chinese papers published in UTD journals.There is still a gap between the research strength of management in China and the advanced level in the world. Second,the novelty of theme words in Chinese and American authored papers is generally higher than that in Chinese and American co-authored papers, and transnational cooperation in management will reduce the novelty of theme words in academic papers. The citation frequency of American authored papers is generally higher than that of Chinese authored papers, and the citation frequency of Chinese and American co-authored papers is between them. Cooperation with the United States can enhance the international impact of Chinese management research.Third, the attention and novelty of theme words in academic papers in the field of management have a significant influence on international impact. The attention of theme words in academic papers has a significant promoting effect on the international impact, that is, the more attention the theme words receive, the greater the international impact. The novelty of theme words has a significant inhibitory effect on international impact, that is, the more novel the theme words, the weaker the international impact. The study of management is oriented towards national management practice and has strong practice-orientation. Topics of international concern may not be suitable for China’s management practices. It will still take some time for the study of management problems with Chinese characteristics, with themes that are novel in the international arena, to be widely accepted. For this reason, management research needs to do a good job in the dialogue between Chinese practice and international issues, and between Chinese theory and international practice, too much emphasis on domestic characteristics or international frontier may lead to disconnection between theory and practice.Limited by the data downloaded from the Web of Science(WoS) database, this paper has some limitations on the study of the international impact of the theme words of papers in the field of management. First, although the theme words of papers in the field of management are highly generalized and concise, they can not fully reflect the main research content of the paper, which has certain limitations. Second, the relationship between transnational cooperation, the characteristics of paper theme words and international impact needs further interpretation. Future research can take the characteristics of paper theme words as an intermediary variable to reveal the mechanism of transnational cooperation in research management field affecting the international impact of papers.
