Based on the analysis of attributive-head mismatch structures, the present study points out that the Valence Relation of cognitive grammar directly attributes the integration of mismatch units to the encyclopedic meaning of lexicon, which renders its relevant explanation inadequate. We propose that a multiple correspondence model based on event should be established to afford a more psychologically plausible account for form-meaning mismatch structures. Under this analysis, the essential difference between form-meaning uniformity and mismatch is that the latter embodies more layers of semantic correspondence relations, and thus encompasses a richer body of meaning. The speaker adopts form-meaning mismatch to profile the correspondence at the event level, and background the lexical level correspondence. While the lexical correspondence exists objectively and supports the event level correspondence, the event level correspondence can better express the subjective construal of the speaker.
