Let University Students Have the Wings for Research:Chinese Five Minute Research Presentation Competition 2021

中国大学生5分钟科研演讲是一项用英语讲述科研项目的竞赛,要求本科生和研究生组成团队,开展一项科学实验或社会调查,用收集的数据写成科研小论文,然后用5分钟时间用视频方式向没有专业背景的观众讲解介绍。竞赛从论文指导到大赛评审都要求专业教师和语言教师合作进行。本文介绍了2021第四届中国大学生5分钟科研演讲大赛背景和开展情况,结果发现大赛对于提高大学生的科研能力、科研小论文撰写能力以及团队合作能力都有很大的促进作用,大赛也促进了大学英语从通用英语向学生用英语从事专业学习的专门用途英语的转移。

Chinese Five Minute Research Presentation(5MRP)is a competition for both undergraduate and graduate-level students who are required to orally present a research project in English.They need to collect data by conducting an experiment or investigation and then write a research paper.Ultimately,they need to present their research results orally in a video-recording of no more than five minutes.Participants must work in a team tutored by both discipline-specific teachers and English teachers.This paper is a description of the 5MRP Competition 2021.The results show that the competition improves students’abilities of doing research,writing research papers,and collaborating in a team.It also facilitates the paradigm shift from English for General Purposes(EGP)to English for Specific Purposes(ESP)in College English teaching.
