Chinese overseas students and intercultural learning environments:Academic adjustment,adaptation and experience

摘要 Education of all levels,by its very nature,is a social-human endeavor,its effectiveness being dependent on human capacity and an enabling culture.German universities,as traditionally active academic and cultural host institutions,have spent significant resources on intercultural communication and the internationalization of higher education.My interest and admiration for this book was stimulated by two meetings with the author,Jianni Zhu.The first was in the context of two Sino-German conferences at Humboldt University in 1998 and 2010 on intercultural communication jointly sponsored by the German government and universities in Berlin and Shanghai.The year 2009/2010 was designated as“The Year of Sino-German Science and Education.”Jianni Zhu was then a doctoral student in Humboldt University under the guidance of the renowned cross-cultural studies and comparative education specialist Professor Jürgen Henze.Upon completion of her doctoral study,I had an opportunity to meet Dr.Zhu again in Toronto during a conference trip,and enjoyed our discussion on her thesis research and her first-hand experience of five years of overseas study in Berlin.
