Study on Developmental Stages of Buddhism in Liao Dynasty

辽朝佛教发展可划分为四个时期,四个时期各有不同特征。其中,辽太祖、太宗时期为佛教的引入期,这一时期,辽帝通过开疆拓土,掳掠人口,将佛教引入契丹内地,并确立了佛教在辽朝统治家族中的特殊地位。世宗、穆宗朝为瓶颈期,此时佛教发展裹足不前。景宗、圣宗朝为上升期,辽朝佛教扭转被动局面,开始对周边政权佛教产生影响。兴宗至天祚帝时期为辽朝佛教发展的鼎盛期,辽朝佛教呈现出了前所未有的繁荣。

The development of Buddhism in Liao Dynasty can be divided into four periods with each period having its own characteristics.Among them,the era of Tai Zu and Tai Zong served as the period for the introduction of Buddhism.In this period,Liao Dynasty’s emperors introduced Buddhism into Khitan by opening its territory and plundering people from other nationalities,and created the special status of Buddhism in the ruling class of Liao Dynasty.The era of Shi Zong and Mu Zong served as the bottleneck period when the development of Buddhism was stagnant.During the rising period of Jing Zong and Sheng Zong,Buddhism in Liao Dynasty reversed the passive situation and began to influence Buddhism of neighboring regimes.The era from Xing Zong to Tian Zuo served as the booming period for the development of Buddhism in Liao Dynasty,which achieved unprecedented prosperity.
