Fangji(Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix)is commonly used in classic traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions, with a long history for dispelling wind, relieving pain, promoting urination and reducing swelling. The long-term historical development resulted in abundant resources, but because of different drug using habits in different regions and changes in producing areas, there are obvious clinical phenomenons of homonymous foreign bodies.Aristolochiaceae Hanzhong Fangji,Aristolochiaceae Guangfangji,Tetrandrine Mufangji, and Tetrandrae Fenfangji are all used as Fangji(Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix),so the determination of the basis of Chinese medicinal materials is particularly important for clinical safety and efficacy.By consulting ancient herbal works and modern documents at home and abroad,we mainly reviewed the changes of 4 kinds of Fangji(Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix)names, botanical origin and producing area, and summarizes the chemical constituents and pharmacological effects through referring to recent documents in this paper,in order to provide a reference of Fangji(Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix)for modern clinical applications and further research on its pharmacological mechanisms.
