This article examines public art shifts and through lines in the United States over the past two decades, as well as considerations that are likely to influence the field in the years to come. This research traces just a few prominent developments in an expansive and dynamic field, including social practice approaches, creative placemaking, and the influence of digital technologies. The present period that is the context of this writing is fundamentally altered from just a few years ago, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide calls for racial justice. From within this context, the article considers a few shifting areas primed to impact public art in the future: population distribution, cultural habits, and funding streams. As a broad overview of multiple decades written in the midst of an evolving cultural landscape, this article serves as a starting point, an opening for further consideration of trends that have taken root and changes that may be underway.
