Public art is inevitably related to the social, cultural and political contexts in which it acts, that,in turn, affects the evolution of its theories and practices.Although the recent public art literature in Europe is a huge field to be investigated, this text aims at presenting some of the remarkable publications produced about paradigmatic shifting concerning fundamental notions such as public space and place and its negation of non-place by Marc Augéintroducing those of hybrid, mediatic and mediated public space.Recent works aim to overcome theories that have been dominant for a long time, such as the Habermasian theory of public sphere, underlining a more critical relationship of today’s public art with plurality, neoliberalism, ideology, social justice, decolonization and communication. The publications mentioned understand public art as a form of common knowledge and as commons, rethinking art and civic engagement according to the todays’national and global challenges, against the public space standardization to promote environmental and social ecologies in urban planning, encouraging a complex approach to public art.
