Richard Brinsley Sheridan,one of the most prominent dramatists in the 18th century,portrays numerous women in his comedies.Characterized with strong will and independent thinking,these women struggle for spiritual freedom and female agency by expanding discourse space and breaking the boundary between private and public spheres.They strive for resisting the oppression of the dominant male discourse with joint efforts.Sheridan contructs a female community in his comedies to show his concerns for them.However,the playwright at the same time clearly realizes the predicament for the female community due to the external hegemonic force and internal weaknesses.The nascent female community is doomed to dissolve at the end.
