翻译改写中的伦理透视——以《英译重编传奇小说》为例

Ethical Analysis of Rewriting in Translation——Based on Famous Chinese Short Stories

改写是林语堂对外译介中国文化的常用策略,取得了较好的效果,但严格意义上讲,却违背了翻译内在的忠实要求,引发了对其翻译行为的伦理反思。以切斯特曼的翻译伦理模式为参照,透视编译本《英译重编传奇小说》,发现林语堂较大程度上违背了再现伦理,其用意在消解文化障碍,但仍坚持适度再现,不忘合理传译原文文化特质。翻译改写幅度虽较大,但多出于适应文化语境、契合英语文学规范,且通过副文本这一沟通平台,与读者交流对话。总体上,译者较好地遵守了交际与规范伦理。

Rewriting is a common strategy used by Lin Yutang to translate and introduce Chinese culture to foreign countries,and it has achieved good effects.However,in a strict sense,it violates the inherent require⁃ment of fidelity in translation and triggers ethical reflection on his translation behavior.Taking Chesterman’s mode of translation ethics as a framework,it was found that Lin violated the ethics of representation to a large extent in Famous Chinese Short Stories in order to eliminate cultural barriers,but he still insisted on moderate representation and never forgot to render the cultural traits of the source text reasonably.Although the extent of rewritings is relatively large,most of them are done to conform to cultural context and norms of English litera⁃ture.Meanwhile,Paratexts are used as a communication platform to communicate and dialogue with readers.In a word,the translator kept the ethics of communication and norm-based ethics in his mind all the time.
