Based on the cultural nature of appellatives in the translation of literary classics, this paper intends to conduct a comparative translation study of appellatives in Austen’s novels using the relevant politeness theory. This study finds that negative polite appellations are literally and faithfully translated or re-translated into positive polite appellations by Chinese translators. Positive polite titles were given as direct translations or used to replace positive polite titles. The determinants of such culturally-based transliteration depend mainly on the speaker’s intention and the relationship between the speaker and the addressee.
