To explore the digital game as a new medium of narrative, this study attempts a careful analysis of the sandbox game Minecraft from the perspective of narratology.Minecraft is considered as one of the most important digital games, and it has succeeded in both fields of entertainment and education.Focusing on the user-player,s agency and embodied narrative in the game world, the study counters the view that the sandbox game like Minecraft defies narrative and is not a medium of storytelling. This study argues that the narrative of Minecraft evolves and emerges along with the user-player’s performance and embodied activities. The gamemechanics and context,as the firt"author",invites the user-player to participate in the dialogic interaction as the"co-author"to construct a story that is meaningful.By examining the embodied narrative and distributed authorship, the study contributes to the field of modern narratology by expanding our understanding of the digital game’s narrativity and its affordance.
