Mirror employs a method similar to kwaidan by Haruki Murakami in order to truly express the horror in his heart. Current research lacks an in-depth discussion on the factor of kwaidan in the work and the “horror in the heart” mentioned by Murakami. This article believes that we can see the factor of kwaidan from the narrative forms of mirrors, schools, ladders and the form of hyakumonogatari. In particular, Murakami created a strange atmosphere of horror through living spirits. The living spirits are the incarnations of the “evil” within the body that break free from the control of rationality. Murakami, who advocates individual freedom, regards the system as evil, and the student movement known as anti-system actually give rise to the system that suppresses the individual. This “fuzziness of the boundary between good and evil” is exactly what Murakami wants to express in his heart. Through this supernatural image of living spirits, Murakami intuitively presents the invisible inner terror in a tangible way, showing superb narrative skills.
